New A le ads mean irited?

Seth Steve on, writing for Slate, makes a good point about the new A le ads: John Hodgman (the actor portraying the PC) gets all the good lines. He's the fu y, likable one. The Mac (played by Justin Long) is kind of a oying and not the least bit fu y.

Sadly, I don't think A le counted on Hodgman's rise in popularity before they shot these commercials, but does that mean the ads don't work? Since I am clearly already a Mac user I can't really judge if they work or not. I know there are a few switchers out there that read TUAW, so tell me: do these commercials make you want to buy a Mac?

otlight from the Command Line

0xFE (pronounced "254" I su ose...) has a very nice how-to up showing how to use otlight metadata to find files from the command line. The post shows how the mdfind command goes beyond find, locate and various grep hacks to create flexible and powerful queries. Surprisingly enough, I couldn't find an mdfind man page (mdutil was there) but the mdfind command worked fine for me in Terminal.

A typical mdfind command goes something like mdfind Sadun, where Sadun is the search word. To limit the search to a particular folder use the -only flag. mdfind -only ~/Desktop Sadun.

The mdls command di lays the metadata a ociated with a ecified file. e.g.

It's a great post that goes into far more detail and is well worth a careful read.

Do you watch video on your iPod?

I'm a big iPod video watcher. I love watching my shows while waiting on slow lines or at the dentist or at the DMV. My kids watch video when we're carpooling and my hu and has a boatload of old John Wayne movies digitized that travel with us when we go to hotels. Perha we're not the most normal iPod users on Earth, but we use the iPod video features a lot. More than we even use the audio.

According to a recent study by Nielsen, we're completely out of step with most people.

Ars Technica reports that the demand for iPod video features is greatly overblown--if you believe Nielsen. After following 400 iPod users for a month, Nielsen concluded that a very small number of iPod users are interested in the video functionality of their iPod.

Now before you jump to any conclusio , keep in mind that those 400 users weren't all using video iPods--nearly a third didn't own or use video iPods. The Nielsen numbers suggest that only about 1% of the content played on the iPods they surveyed was video, a pretty pathetic showing. Even after restricting iPod use to video iPods, that number only rose to 2.2%.

Surprising, i 't it?

So what about you, TUAW readers? Do you use your iPod for video? Or are you mostly music listeners out there? Let us know in the comments as we conduct our own u cientific and highly skewed poll.

Daring Fireball Live at Macworld with Panic's Sa er

Like many on the Mac web, we at TUAW are fa of John Gruber's Daring Fireball. Now, thanks to Macworld Magazine, we can all hear Gruber at a se ion he ran at Macworld, together with his guest Cabel Sa er of Panic. As nearly always with Gruber, it's an interesting se ion with on the fly commentary about the iPhone (which is perforce a little underinformed), discu ion about Panic and independent Mac development: definitely worth a listen (caution: the language is a little rough some times).

[Edit: Fixed Sa er's name]

TUAW Podcast #13

This week's podcast involves Dan Pourhadi and the C4 developer shindig he attended, those exclusive Leopard scree hots we na ed, iPod viruses and the corporate blame game, and we round off with A le's preliminary 4th quarter earnings results. Dan and I kept things short this time around, as the podcast rounds off at just over 20 minutes and 18.6MB.

As usual, you can grab the podcast via a direct link, our podcast R feed or in the iTunes Store podcast directory. Enjoy the show.

Update: It seems there's a bug in our iTS feed preventing from getting this latest episode, though our other links for acce ing the podcast are working just fine. We'll keep you posted.

Strange wooden velvet-lined case for iPod nano

Occasionally strange iPod cases surface (no not that pink knit case your great-aunt made you last year).Take for example this wooden velvet-linediPod nano case engraved on the cover with the To-fu Oyako character found by Popgadget today. I find a few things wrongwith this case, beyond the fact that a cartoon tofu guy is on the front: there is no acce to the iPod controls nor, from what I can see, acce to the dock co ector when the case is closed.

I think we may have reachedsaturation on iPod cases folks. Feel free to post your favorite wacky character that should a ear on an engraved iPodcase in the comments. I vote for Trogdor (the Burninator) on a metal slip down iPod case.

PicLe Plugin for Safari, beta

Jason ell at Macworld just ti ed me off to PicLe . PicLe is a Safari-only plugin from Cooliris that enables gorgeous full-screen slideshows on the fly, out of whatever set of images you are currently viewing in Flickr, Photobucket, Facebook, as well Google, Yahoo and Ask.com Image search engines.

Once the plugin is i talled, you'll notice a discreet slideshow icon in the lower left corner when you mouse over a slideshow-a ropriate thum ail on one of the abovementioned sites. Click that icon and watch your monitor fill with the slideshow. Then you can navigate by using the o creen slideshow controls ala iPhoto or use your keyboard - or even your A le Remote! To exit out of the slideshow and return to your browser window, just hit your escape key. If you're like me, you might not be impre ed with this concept at all until you've tried it for yourself - but trust me, it's pretty cool.

Even more impre ive is that for now at least - it's only compatible with Safari, which is a trend I wouldn't mind continuing! You'll need 10.4 or later as well since it needs Safari 2.0.

You can download Beta 1 for free and if for some reason you don't like it or have a problem with it, you'll find the "Remove PicLe " menu under the View menu in Safari. Let us know what you think!

Ke o: Your iPod jacket alternative

ke oYou say you don't have six hundred bucks sitting around for the Burton/Motorola Audex jacket? Don't worry, you can still be cool on the slopes. The Ke o jacket features similar iPod co ectivity for only $275US. Once your iPod is co ected to the jacket i ide the interior pocket, you can use butto on the left sleeve to pause or play your music, skip forward or back and adjust the volume. It requires no batters and can be machine washed or dry cleaned without damaging anything. I don't know if you need to have the dramatically iked hair that the Kempo models are orting, but what do I know.

PC World's 20 most i ovative products of 2006

PC World has just released their '20 Most I ovative Products for 2006,' and there i 't an A le product in sight. Why, then, am I writing about it you might ask. Because 3 Mac related items did make it on the list:
  • Intel Core 2 Duo: This little chip powers the most recent crop of Macs and it clocked in (get it?) at number 2 on the list.
  • Parallels Desktop for Mac: Entering at number 3 is Parallels Desktop, the Mac a of 2006. No other a has received such good reviews, buzz, or accolades. The best part? All the praise is well deserved.
  • Google SketchUp: Google's relatio hip with the Mac has been rocky, but they are really working hard to patch things up. SketchUp is available for both Mac and PC and it is darn fun to play around with (and I bet it is even useful to some folks).
Congrats to everyone who made it onto the list this year, and boo to PC World for reading the article acro several pages.

CrushFTP server goes UB

Setting up FTP services on your Mac can be as simple as checking the "FTP" box in Sharing Preferences, if you don't care about anonymous acce or maintaining a user list separate from your regular accounts. It can be as full-featured as ru ing Rumpus or Mac OS X Server (both over $200), or as free as PureFTPd Manager (with an excellent walkthrough at MacDevCenter). Seems like there's an open middle of the market, no?

Now, the venerable CrushFTP has been revised to version 4.0; it offers a midrange, Universal Binary (and cro -platform Mac/Win/Linux) FTP server priced per co ection ($30 for 10 concurrent users). Crush offers a fairly sophisticated co ole and Web management UI; both SFTP and WebDAV services along with FTP (great for rolling your own .mac replacement); granular bandwidth, user/group, and time window control automatic compre io and resumable downloads. If you're not interested in the nitty-gritty of PureFTPd config or the high cost of the pro solutio , the new Crush might be worth a look.

iPod in ace

Anousheh A ari is the first female ace tourist, as well as the first female Muslim and Iranian in ace. That's pretty cool. But what does a ace tourist bring with her to help ease her to sleep? Why what has become a traveler's best friend, an iPod. Anousheh blogs about her experiences on the I (International ace Station) and she notes that before hitting the hay she sli ed on her headphones and rocked out to her iPod.

Makes me wonder how many iPods have been in ace.

Thanks, Dhanur.

12:25 PM: Its over.
< an style="font-style: italic;">
12:23 PM: Feature roundup. Additional notes: iCal goes full multi user with caldav standard. Xcode 3.0 a ounced this afternoon. Developer previes of 10.5 available today. Shi in ring.
< an style="font-style: italic;">
11:29 AM: "[Microsoft] end money on r%26am d, but all they seem to do is copy Google and A le." 10.5 preview. 10 major things

#1: 64-bit a licatio - Tiger had 64-bit UNIX. Leopard will have 64-bit Carbon and Cocoa. 32-bit compatible. Run 32-bit and 64-bit a side-by-side, no emulation or tra lation, full 64bit, top to bottom.

#2: Time Machine - "Everyone says 'Back it up', but people don't" Only 26% of people back up their data, and they mostly do it manually. Only 4% back up automatically. All of this changes with Time Machine. Automatically back up your Mac. Backs up EVERYTHING. Restores EVERYTHING. You can buy a new HD and restore on to it. You can restore all data or pick and choose. Back up to local HD or remote server. "Whole new way of backing up and restoring." (Windows has had something like this at least since ME) Steve does a demo. A file is mi ing from a folder. (Finder looks the same.) Click on Time Machine in the Dock. "Time is a dime ion that receeds back into your desktop". Windows in time are stacked behind each other. Looks damn sexy. Fly through time till you see a difference. (I a ume he mea in what files are there and what arent) Double click files to get previews, click to restore and it re-a ears in the present (TRI Y!) Works with a licatio other than Finder as well. Demo's with Addre ook. "Search the past." Demo's with iPhoto, but something goes wrong. Steve elegantly force-quits.

#3: The Complete Package - Some a in beta, some only on new Macs. Everything shi with Leopard. Bootcamp shi with 10.5. Next generation of Front Row. New PhotoBooth works with other cameras.

#4: aces - Looks like virtual deskto . Take a few a licatio of a particular task and give it its own ace. Demo time. Ok, it IS virtual deskto , but that doe 't sound as cool as " aces". Clicking an icon of an a takes you to its ace. Nice expose-ish thing to see all aces. Drag windows between aces.

#5: otlight - Even better in Leopard. Search other Macs. Search servers. Advanced search. Boolean operators. Can ecify things like file-type for each query. Acts as an a lication launcher. Shows recent items.

#6: CoreAnimation - "Higher production values." Time Machine uses CoreAnimation. Text, images, video, OpenGL. Start, goal, key frames. Automatic animation. Demo. iTunes scree aver. Old: 4k lines of code. New with CoreAnimation: 400. Album art po , moves independantly in 3D, camera moves. Holy Crap. Steve re-creates the iTunes art cityscape commercial in real-time. Interactive and live. 2000 lines of code for the demo.

#7: Universal Acce - VoiceOver advances. Braille su ort. Closed captioning in QT. Faster and better navigation. VoiceOver demo. Text-to- eech demo. Tiger voice reads the text (sounds as expected). Vista's voice reads it now (sounds a bit better, but glitchy). Leopard voice "Wow" (says DanD). You hear it inhale before each sentence. Sounds fantastic. Even ed up, it sounds good.

#8: Mail - Major enhancements. Stationary, notes. To-Do's. Stationary is a layout-ish thing like Pages, probably for HTML email. Notes demo. Notes are like ecial emails to yourself. Steve uses the words "boom" and "coagulates" in the same paragraph. There is an R icon in the sidebar of Mail. Make any email a To-Do. To-Do service which any a can tie into. iCal is tied in. System wide service. Looks like you can pre-populate text into Stationary, like your own letterhead. Steve a arently really likes stationary, perha one of his pet features? Notes just look like windowed Stickies. Notes a ear in the I ox as well as a Notes submailbox.

#9: Dashboard - Two new thing

DashCode. design, develop, debug widgets. pre-ca ed widget templates such as podcasts, r , images, etc. graphical tool for HTML and C . Javascript source editor and debugger.

Web Clip. take any part of any site and make it a widget. Hit a button in Safari, drag the page to the right size, clicks done. Web Cli are live.

#10: iChat - Multiple logi , invisibility, animated buddy ico , video recording, ta ed chats. Ta look like Colluquy, PhotoBooth effects in video conferences. iChat theater. Show slideshows and stuff. Backdro . Live video backdro . "iChat for Leopard will be a grand slam"
< an style="font-style: italic;">
11:25 AM: "What has the computer been doing for the last 5 years?" Bertrand < an style="text-decoration: line-through;">Ru el Serlet takes the stage. Shows slides of UI's, all e entially the same, makes jokes. "Underneath it all, it's still Windows" (making fun of Vista). Still has registry, still has DLL problems, still has required activation. Vista is A les past. Steve back to talk about the future.
< an style="font-style: italic;">
11:21 AM: Steve is back, time for OS X. 5 major releases so far, 19M active users. Tiger on Intel was in a way a 6th major release. Tra ition has gone seamle ly. 86M line of code; 0 hiccu . Over 3000 Universl Binaries. Steve thanks the devs.

C Story - Switch to Macs For Better Online Security

Most of our readers know that Mac OS X is a much more secure environment than any flavor of Windows. Microsoft apologists like to say that the lack of viruses and malware targeted towards Mac OS X is because its much smaller marketshare. I believe there's a kernel of truth in this argument, but it's also an oversimplification. It's true that Windows is a larger target, but it's also true that Windows is just not very secure. Study after study after study shows that plugging a Windows computer into a broadband co ection without any protection is a surefire way for that computer to become infected with a virus or worm. Yes, there are ways to harden your Windows computer so that it doe 't become a am-sending zombie and these anti-virus and anti- yware tools are getting better all the time, but it's still a lot to ask a new computer user to do just to get online.

So it's nice to see the C and Sophos (a leading maker of anti-virus and security software) recognize Mac OS X for its better security. I'll be the first person to tell you that Mac OS X i 't totally secure; in fact there is no such thing as a completely secure operating system. But there can be no question that Mac OS X and its underlying Unix permi io model is more secure than any flavor of Windows.

I can hear the comments already. "But, but...just you wait for Vista. It will solve all the security problems." Well, if you remember, that's what people were saying about WinXP. And Win2K before that. And even Win98 before that. Yes, Vista will probably be a more secure environment than its predece ors, but that's not saying much.

iSoundCap鈩?Ski Cap

Continuing in the long line of questionable iPod enabled clothes comes the iSoundCa trade; Ski Cap. This 100% acrylic fiber hat has a little pocket in the back for you to slip your iPod nano into. There is a clear plastic window that lets you acce the click wheel, and eyelets that allow you to ake the headphones through the hat.

I can't imagine this being any more convenient than keeping the iPod in a coat pocket. Sure, if you are skiing down a mountain you won't want to fiddle with a pocket, but won't you be wearing big gloves anyway?

Ah well, I've never been skiing so clearly I am not in the target audience. The cap is expected to be available on the 18th of this month, though pricing has not been a ounced.

The A le Store is down

Ah, the delicate dance that is the few hours before a Stevenote. A le's web elves are not only busy updating the iTunes Store, it would seem that are updating A le's online store as well (and not just in the US, we have reports that the A le store in several countries).

This just builds the excitement, doe 't it?

CNET Asia reviews Levi's RedWire DLX Jea

CNET Asia has taken Levi's iPod enabled RedWire DLX jea for a in, and surprisingly (to me, at least) they liked them. The jea get high marks for the integrated controller, redwire co ectivity, and comfort. The included Levi headphones, though, aren't very good and the ecial pocket for the iPod has no additional padding to keep your iPod safe.

Tim Bray back on Mac

Remember all that hu ub about Mac geeks switching to Ubuntu? Well, Tim Bray (one of those geeks) is back on the Mac and he thinks that it beats Ubuntu, though just barely. He lists a number of interesting reaso for why one would choose OS X or some other Linux distro, all of which seem very reasonable. He has decided to keep his data in non-proprietary formats, which mea that any OS can open up his stuff which, in turn, mea that he can choose whatever OS he wants. We could all learn a little something from Tim's attitude towards computers.

Strange new sidebar shortcuts in iTunes 7

A post at Mac OS X Hints lists some bizarre shortcuts that a ear to be new in iTunes 7. The shortcuts a ly to selecting the various content sectio such as Music, Movies and the Store, but what's strange is that if you have any playlists which begin with the same letter as the shortcut, the playlist takes precedence. For example: the letter M (amongst others) can take you to your Movies section, but if you have a playlist titled "Mashu ," the letter M will take you to the playlist, not the major content section.

These shortcuts are very strange indeed, and it would be nice to have a more unified and universal list tucked away under a menu somewhere, so the shortcuts worked no matter what you were doing in iTunes, or what was selected. Still, if you're interested, check out Mac OS X Hint's list of shortcuts found so far.

Zune/iPod oof video from...Microsoft?

The other day, I posted about a Zune video riff on "I'm a Mac", fully convinced that it was a fa oy production. After all, you can't "squirt" video from one Zune to another (at least without resorting to the "rename-it-as-a-jpeg" hack) and it takes more than a single button hit to send data, and so forth. Lots of inaccuracies.

So I was surprised to find out on the semi-official Zune I ider blog that the oof video actually came from Microsoft itself. The video was first screened at an internal Microsoft meeting, and had the Microsoft people "rolling". Like the "Microsoft desig the iPod package" video, it was meant for an internal Microsoft audience, but someone leaked it to Youtube.

TUAW poll results: The big a ouncement

A full 25% of you labeled the event a"huge disa ointment," 19% said the stuff is %26quot retty cool," and only 2% of you felt that the eventwas a home run.

Justin Long a Mac no longer?

Radar Online is reporting that Justin Long, the actor who plays the part of the Mac in A le's Get a Mac campaign, is no longer an A le okesman. A new round of ads is being worked on with John Hodgman (the PC) and < an cla ="bodyText_interior">director Phil Morrison but Justin Long with not a ear in them, according to his 'people.'

Was this A le's decision, or Justin's? We may never know, but Justin's representative said,
< an cla ="bodyText_interior">"Justin's a movie star, not a commercial guy."

So, dear TUAW readers, who do you think should fill his shoes as the Mac in the new commercials?

Thanks, Matt.

Pirate up your Mac with Jo y Roger

What do you get for the Mac portable user who has everything? Why, a sticker from Jo y Roger of course. This $4 sticker (that includes shi ing in the US, International orders cost $5) i tantly tra forms any MacBook, iBook, MacBook Pro, or PowerBook into a laptop that Blackbeard would be glad to use.

Each additional sticker costs $2, and if you want 10 or more a deal can be made. Yar.

These stickers make a great accompaniment to the English to Pirate tra lator widget.

djay - a "groundbreaking" audio a lication

djay, as you can see, is a "groundbreaking" new audio a that offers a slew DJ-oriented features to get your party started, including:
  • Real-time audio mix tra mi ion over Bonjour network
  • Real-time audio mix recording
  • iTunes Integration
  • Automatic artwork image loading on both turntables
  • Time-Stretching
  • Pitch-Shifting with amazing blend effect
  • Audio Unit Effects Su ort
  • Pre-Cueing (requires multicha el sound card)
  • Cro fade automation
  • Magnetic tempo slider for precise beat matching
  • GarageBand i truments integration via network
  • A leScriptability for mixing automation
and a whole lot more. Seriously, I had to whittle out quite a bit from djay's feature list just to fit these key points into the post. I'm not a DJ myself, but checking this out sure makes me wish I was.

All these features come in (what looks like) a slick package for the low, low price of $0; in fact, I can't even find a donation link at the product's site, algoriddim.net (clever). If any more DJ-capable TUAW readers check this out, please share a few words of your wisdom with the rest of the cla .

Fortunately, more compatible shoes have also been added to the Nike Plus site, though I'm sure pioneering DIYers are scoffing at the thought of purchasing a pair, and are already hard at work at a embling ecs and carving out their present ru ing gear (I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to see a guide for thi send in those ti people!).

On a related note, TUAW reader Aaron sent us a question that y'all might want to bat around: has anyone heard about the battery life of this kit? Aaron noticed that this kit's ecs mention the battery in the shoe tra mitter is not replaceable, so those who run 8 miles a day like Aaron (or who I'll refer to as: RoboRu er) might have to find out how much juice these things hold before they kick the bucket. On the other hand, I'm sure in a couple of months A le will whip out a $40 charging dock for the $30 se or kit and make all this worrying about battery life a moot point.

Gawker updated with more camera su ort, desktop time-la ing

Gawker, the clever a for recording, sharing and combining time-la e movies, has been updated to version 0.70 with some unique features. It is now compatible with non-iSight cameras, including even DV cameras, and can record from up to four cameras simultaneously (when you co ider the power of using other cameras through Bonjour, this gets pretty interesting). The ability to capture deskto as well as a countdown timer have also been added.

Gawker is an open source project and available from its home at SourceForge.

iMac 24-inch surprise: graphics card is upgradeable?

MacsimumNews broke down a MacGeneration post (a French publication) revealing that the new 24-inch iMac A le introduced this week could quite po ibly be the first iMac with a truly upgradeable graphics card. Thanks to a new Mobile PCI Expre Module (MXM - originally designed for high-end notebooks) standard in the biggest iMac of 'em all, owners might be able to upgrade their own graphics card and (finally) ditch that old just throw it out when you want to upgrade stigma - if this is true, of course. You can also thank NVIDIA and their partnership with some of the industry leading notebook manufacturers (we would imagine Alienware and even Dell, believe it or not) for this standard that was quite a long time coming.

Why this much-requested feature i 't getting any otlight time on the new iMac's graphics page, or why the 24-inch is the only model to receive the coveted upgrade-ability treatment, definitely doe 't help our skeptical side. We'll be investigating this further, as it could easily be that A le adopted the standard for one reason or another (like cheaper manufacturing costs), but still soldered the card (which will most surely cause an uproar, if true).

We'd also like to echo MacsimumNews' o ervation that it would be stellar if A le could work this standard into the next MacBook Pro revision, as the company kinda dro ed the ball with their current lineup.

Thanks Michael!

The iPhone that wa 't

It is Monday, and you know what that mea ! The iPhone is upon us. Much like Brian Lam of Gizmodo promised us, the iPhone is here and it i 't what you were expecting. Sure, we all knew that A le doe 't hold the trademark for the iPhone, but that doe 't mean that A le wouldn't release one of the most anticipated products of their history with a name they didn't own, on a Monday scant days before Christmas.

Oh, wait, that's right. The iPhone is a Linksys product and has nothing to do with the mythical iPhone much as Laurie predicted. So what does this tell us? Not much, other than Mac fa really like rumors, but we knew that already.

Anyway, iPhone i 't that great of a name to begin with. A le has a great brand with iPod so I predict that if A le introduces a phone it will be under the iPod brand, though that's a big if.

Steve Jo is in fine health

Hot on the heels of the WWDC '06 Stevenote the Macweb was in a tizzy. Didn't Steve look a little sickly on stage? Why did he include so many other A le execs in the keynote? Could this mean that Steve is in ill health?

Katie Cotton, A le's VP of worldwide corporate communicatio (she never calls, she never writes), told InformationWeek that, 'Steve's health is robust and we have no idea where these rumors are coming from.'

So there you have it, Steve is fine but I bet he is a wee bit preoccupied.

Rig of the Day: That's some office

The more, the better, right? This office co ists of dual 2.0Ghz G5 (probably replaced by now with a Mac Pro), a 15 inch PowerBook, a 1.0 Ghz G4, and three Cinema di lays. That's a lot of computing power for one office.

Slingbox beta client coming for Mac OS X

If you're primarily a Mac user, you probably haven't heard much about Slingbox, largely in part because it's never had a Mac OS X client. Slingbox, for those interested, is a device that attaches to your home TV/cable/DVR setup and allows you to stream your TV programming over the internet, typically to a Windows PC or even some mobile phones - but soon, a Mac as well. Blake Krikorian, Sling Media's CEO, confirmed yesterday in an interview with the The Guardian that a beta Mac client was coming "this week" for Slingbox, though since it's already Friday even in the U.S., maybe Blake includes 'the weekend' when defining 'a week'.

All joking aside, this is great news for Mac users, as the Slingbox has typically been in the ranks of those gadgets reserved for the elite Windows nerds who just gotta have their TV (don't forget, 'nerd' is technically preferred over 'geek' as a positive adjective). We'll keep you posted when an actual Slingbox client is launched.

Thanks Dave Zatz

Update: Dave Zatz just informed me that Sling Media's VP dro ed him a line to say that Blake was misquoted by The Guardian. As it tur out, the private beta is live and well, but the public beta is still a month or so out.

A le releases Boot Camp 1.0.2 beta - sa details

A le has updated Boot Camp to version 1.0.2 beta (remember: it's been a beta all along), but seems to have forgotten to release any details of what this update is all about. I couldn't track anything down at A le's Downloads or Su ort sites, and even the VersionTracker entry notes that the MacFixIt ninjas came up empty as well. They managed to i tall the new version on a MacBook Pro without a hitch and settle for a uming that new Windows XP drivers are included with this version. They recommend i talling the new version and burning a new drivers CD, then booting into Windows and re-i talling the drivers.

I'd try this out myself, but I decided the other day that I don't need any of the advantages that Boot Camp offers over Parallels (such as U and true video card su ort), so I'm blowing away my Boot Camp Windows partition and reclaiming that ace for a compre -able Parallels i tallation. Now I just need to find my Windows CDs in a townhouse we still haven't finished u acking and moving into.

Engadget: "Time Machine restores best, not first"

Ro Rubin has posted an interesting Switched On column at Engadget this week analyzing two of the largest enhancements on their way in Leopard: Time Machine and aces. Ro points out that, obviously, A le i 't quite first with a virtual desktop manager or a piece of backup software - not by any stretch of the imagination. He even explai some of these features' counterparts from other platforms, which is an interesting trip through time and other platforms.

However, Ro ti his hat to A le's versio because they do soar above the rest in their presentation, integration and (an A le trademark) user experience. Time Machine wi a ecific merit in its own right because it seems to be the first backup utility to allow users to browse the history of their directory structure just as it existed on their machine - with file previews, folder structure and everything. This is e ecially useful because of the visual nature of so much of our work; tracking down a deleted roll of images, for example, is much easier by browsing their thum ails and original folder organization than trying to gue whether IMG_0841.JPG or IMG_0814.JPG was the picture of little Joh y taking his first ste .

It's a good article that gives credit where credit is due, and offers some high hopes for the quality of these major new features.

Give Mac OS X a unified UI with Uno

unoA few weeks ago we asked how you felt about some of the inco istencies in Mac OS Xs user interface. Re o es were mixed. Lach said, "This stuff drives me nuts. Even Quicktime and iTunes look differentfrom each other. iPhoto is a disaster, you didn't mention that littlea . iSync is a me , and they're all different from Safari and Mail.At least in Windows the design is CO ISTANTLY cra y." But Lach wa 't alone. Continued after the jump.

Others were le concerned with the whole thing. Reader djones, for i tance, felt differently: "I don't think it would be good to be 100% co istent acro the board...you needsome sort of visual indication of which a lication you're in. Itdoe 't need to scream it, but the subtle variatio in A le's firstparty a are enough to tell you that they're a family, but you won'tmistake one for the other."

I recalled this discu ion earlier this afternoon when I saw a link to Uno at What Do I Know. Uno is a theme for Mac OS X that gives every single, solitary window and menu bar the exact same look (even the Dock'swidget bar). Lach, this one is for you. djones, steer clear. Everyoneelse, make your choice. UNO is free (I could not find systemrequirements).

Another 10 strangest iPod acce ories article

Have you heard? Some manufacturers are making wacky iPod products! Seriously, it is true. Would I lie to you? Luckily Busine week has yet another round up of these gizmos for us to chuckle about, though I've seen most of these products before.

AOL breaks Adium betas

If you're a user of the recent Adium 1.0 beta releases, and you've been having i ues co ecting to AIM, you're not alone. According to reports in the official IRC cha el and from developers, AOL did something to change the co ection protocol, ecifically involving the new joscar co ection protocol, co ection rate limiting, and buddy icon requests. Users experiencing problems have three optio :

1. Take a break! Enjoy your newly found freedom from the co tant barrage of i tant me ages.

2. Use a web-based IM service such as meebo.

3. Replace your Adium beta with the older .89.1 build.

Note: AOL re onds to the rapid co ectio this problem causes by locking out your account for a few minutes. The more you try and co ect while you're locked out, the longer the lock stays.

Ask the readers: PowerBook protection

I'm humble enough to admit when I need some help, and I'm lucky to have an esteemed group of readers such as yourselves comprising my very own hive mind. The i ue is this:

My trusty PowerBook is getting on a bit in the years, and like all creatures, with age comes imperfection. The telltale sig of PowerBook pitting are starting to show on the wrist rests, and the lovely matte finish originally orted by the trackpad has begun to wear down, making it difficult to mouse. I know there are a few optio out there for the wrist rests, and I'm leaning toward the Marware Protection Pack, but what can I do about the trackpad? The only trackpad covers I can find either have printed desig or come as part of an expe ive protection packages.

I'm sure more than one of you has been in my position, so I look forward to your suggestio .

A le logo on Sony 3 site a mystery

Joystiq, a sister blog, has been following an odd story about an A le logo and a Sony 3 site. As you can see from the image, an A le logo *bli * at the begi ing of a 3 Flash promo movie at Sony's site (it has since been 'fixed', but Joystiq links to a copy of the original movie here). Their investigation has more or le resulted in dead end at first the logo was thought to be a watermark left by creating the movie in a trial version of Shake. As it tur out, trial versio of Shake don't allow saving to begin with.

The i ue has turned into a bit of a mystery, as A le (of course) ha 't made any sort of comment, and Sony a arently promised a statement but has yet to deliver.

In the meantime, we'll forgo eculation and leave the rumoring up to you readers.

A that su ort .Mac

A le has published a list of a licatio that offer su ort for .Mac in one way or another. The list is broken down into four categories, and offers a description of each a .

That's nice and all, but I would have preferred a blurb on just how each piece of software works with .Mac. Still, the next time you're asking yourself, "Why am I paying for this again," you can refer to the list.

WWDC: WallFlowers Rock A le Campus Bash

awn of dylanD'Arcy Norman was one of the lucky ducks who actually got to attend WWDC, and even luckier, he got the o ortunity to attend the A le Campus Bash. Well, unfortunately it wa 't U2 and Bono rocking the stage, but then again it wa 't Mr. "Your Body is a Wonderland" either (I hate that song). . . .

Rather, it was everybody's favorite band featuring the awn of Dylan as the lead-singer: the Wallflowers. And from the sound of D'Arcy's report on the event, it not only rocked, but the Wallflowers would seem to be a band that 'gets' the whole tech thing: "They did a full set, too, not just a cheap 20-minute gig. A full hour-long set. And I think they were having fun, too Questio thrown to the audience about how to get blackberries working Heckling jugglers Very cool."

Very cool, indeed.

Video: David Pogue proves Vista doe 't copy OS X

In the short NYT video which goes along with his print review of Redmond's newest OS, the always amusing David Pogue takes it upon himself to debunk that the old saw that Microsoft just copies A le. For i tance, David points out that unlike otlight, which is located at the top right of the desktop, Vista's equivalent search feature is located at the bottom left. Certainly worth a chuckle at Microsoft's expe e.

[Edit: Sorry about problems with the link. It should be fixed now.]

"WPF/E" (codename) Community Technology Preview for Mac (Dec 2006)

Microsoft has just released the "WPF/E" (codename) Community Technology Preview for Mac (Dec 2006) (gotta love those Microsoft names). What is WPF/E? It is short for 'Windows Presentation Foundation/ Everywhere' which is the new graphical su ystem of the .NET Framework 3.0.

Why do you care about this? Remember that the 'E' stands for everywhere because Microsoft wants people to write cro platform a with WPF/E. This community technology preview is a browser plugin works in Safari 2.0 and Firefox < an>1.5.0.8. This preview expires on < an>February 18, 2007.

WPF/E on your Mac! What could be better? I must say, though, that I couldn't get this to work on my MacBook (your mileage may vary).

New dance craze: Origami Benjamin Shuffle

When you've chugged back a gallon of 'nog in an effort to soothe your irits over the size of your holiday bonus, co ider the gifts that employees of BIG Images got this year. The entire staff of the large-format printing provider got iPod Shuffle units... neatly wra ed in two $100 bills.

Nothing says "We a reciate your contribution to the succe of our busine " more than wra ing paper made from legal tender. For companies that aren't feeling as flush as BIG Images, may I suggest giving out Zunes on a bed of pe ies?

A le versus Microsoft

So what's the real difference between A le and Microsoft? Microsoft tries to bribe bloggers. A le sues them. It would be hard to come up with a joke as odd as this real-life situation. Someone posted a link to a site that used iPhone screen shots to skin Windows Mobile phones. Let me repeat. It was a link to an external site. He received a cease and desist order from A le's lawyers.

"It has come to our attention that you have posted a scree hot of A le's new iPhone and links that facilitate the i tallation of that scree hot on a PocketPC device...While we a reciate your interest in the iPhone, the ico and scree hot di layed on your we ite are copyrighted by A le, and copyright law explicitly prohibits unauthorized di lay and distribution of copyrighted works. A le therefore demands that you remove this scree hot from your we ite and refrain from facilitating the further di emination of A le's copyrighted material by removing the link to http://forum.xda-developers.com, where said ico and scree hot are being distributed."

Between an Acer Ferrari and a cease-and-desist letter? I'd prefer the Acer, thank you very much.

Thedevelopers of Voice Candy pitch is as doing for microphones whatPhotobooth does for webcams. All of this for $12.95 (there is a 15 day demo).

A le posts pics of Macbook wi ers

As part of the festivities surrounding the opening of the Fifth Avenue A le Store in NYC (are you sick of hearing about it yet?), A le gave away a bunch of MacBook. Here is a gallery of some of the wi ers. Don't they look so ha y? Don't you feel so envious? So do we.

Congratulatio , folks.
