Parallels Desktop Release Candidate 2, uh, released


Get your mice clicking ladies and gentlemen, as Parallels has offered up the final test version of Parallels Desktop for Mac, their virtualization software that allows you to run almost any OS right within Mac OS X. With this version, however, Parallels has increased the a 's final price to $79.99, as they have incorporated their Compre or Server tool (due to user feedback) into the software package for streamlining and optimizing your virtual machines and the amount of disk ace they occupy. The beta testing pre-order price of $39.99 is still in place, and probably more a etizing than ever. Other new features and improvements in the Release Candidate 2 include:
  • Significantly improved performance
  • Improved U performance and broader device su ort
  • Improved Host-guest networking
  • Automatic network adapters now switch on-the-fly
  • Guest OS no longer steals host IP addre in some DHCP servers
  • Fullscreen mode is now customizable
  • Integration with Virtue is now bug-free
  • Customizable Ctrl + Click ma ing
  • Guest 32bit color is su orted when Parallels Tools is i talled
  • Improved Shared folders performance
  • Resolved shared folders/MS Office incompatibility i ues
  • Windows 98 no longer co umes 99% host CPU even when idle (in VT-x mode)
Also note that if you download this newest release, you must re-i tall the Parallels Tools for guest Windows i tallatio (NT/2000/XP/2003). As with previous beta releases, this download is free before the software package goes official.

A le still doe 't really get email

a le webmail stinksFix one problem, and another comes up. Everyone was a big fan of how A le's .Mac webmail used to sometimes attach a text document when you simply replied to someone. I mean, I know I was utterly overjoyed to go back, copy and paste, remove the attachment, and reply. Wow, that was really easy, wa 't it? Yeah. Well now A le has fixed that with their shiny new "Web 2.0"-ish email. Unfortunately, there's a new problem. When I reply to certain emails (usually Reply All in a list), the addre is often filled out with the person's name, followed by their email addre . This makes se e, as pretty much every email system in the world does this. But A le, ever the i ovator, has made this "break" your email. Trying to send will result in an error, claiming quoted contents aren't valid email addre es. Golly A le, thanks for saving me from my own stupidity! Now I get to manually edit the addre es just to make sure they are correct. Another time waster. Don't get me started on how it's taken our favorite fruit half a decade just to build an almost-usable email client a lication (certainly won't be busine -cla anytime this decade). I mean, waiting until 2007 just to have a proper email client? Super. Anyone else not really digging A le's lame attempts to manage email?

iPod expa ion still in early phase

Credit Sui e thinks that A le can expand their iPod busine by 20% a quarter for the foreseeable future. Sure, there are those who think that the iPod craze is cooling off but Credit Sui e brings the numbers to back up their 'out perform' rating for A le stock. It seems that only about 10% of PC users have an iPod, and the people that do own an iPod are replacing them sooner (every 1.5 years as o osed to 2 years previously). They also point to the fact that A le really ha 't been concentrating on the European market, so there are lots of potential customers out there.

iPods in our cars, on our shelves, and in our shoes? We live in amazing times, people.

Macworld: The many faces of Get Info

The Get Info window works in a few similar but at times mysterious ways, and Rob Griffiths has put together an article that outlines each of its three iteratio in Mac OS X 10.4 (Panther has two). While this might be rudimentary to some of you hard-core Mac OS X users out there, this is a handy feature walk-through of each slightly different version - Get Info, Super Get Info and Summary Info - for those who haven't covered this ground yet. Sony: Sorry about all those batteries, can we still be friends?

Poor Sony, they just can't seem to win lately. At least they have apologized for those batteries that had a tendency to make lapto burst into flames, and that has to count for something right?

Sony says the problems were caused by microscopic pieces of metal that somehow got into the batteries and caused a short circuit. Well, at least the batteries didn't ship with a virus or something.

Quick! Where's the debug menu?

Matt Thomas has a bug stuck in his 23" A le Cinema Di lay. Amusingly, the little fella is still alive: check out the video above to see it wandering acro his screen. He has a olutely no idea how to get the bug out (although one commentator suggests he should lure the bug out with morsels of food) so at the moment Matt's hoping for the bug to graciously die off screen.

The same thing ha ened to me with my 17" Samsung LCD, I believe it was even the same type of bug! I too waited for the bug to die off screen but i tead, the bug decided to lay his grave in the dead centre, right at eye level. Now whenever friends use my screen they i tictually attempt to swipe it away. What do I say to them when they ask about it? "Well, I was playing this game called Bugdom - it crashed really bad one day and left one of the bugs behind". Gets 'em every time.

Adobe Flash Player 9 updated

Adobe has posted version 9.0.28.0 of its ubiquitous Flash Player browser plugin. The update includes many fixes and improvements, including Windows Vista su ort (hey - Adobe even beat the Zune to that!), su ort for full screen mode in web players and a security update addre ing the HTTP Header Injection Vulnerabilities, as described Security Bulletin A 06-18.

A long list of other fixes are included in the Release Notes, which you really should read since Adobe went through all that trouble to type them up.

There are two i tallers - one for Intel-based Macs (Universal Binary) and a leaner one for C-based Macs (requires the Mac OS X 10.1 or later). The C version su orts Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, AOL, Opera, and Safari browsers, while the Intel version reportedly only su orts Firefox, Safari, and Opera.

Microsoft ri off A le's ico , too?

An astute Daring Fireball reader discovered A le's Workgroup Manager icon on Microsoft's Vista Busine Edition "buy now" page. The icon has since been hastily replaced since John Gruber posted about it. He gra ed a screen cap of the original, thankfully, and I can confirm that I saw it for myself this morning.

The bonus "Busines" typo in the same page's tag remai , however. A le took i ue with those findings. Ly Fox, an A le PR director, wrote Information Week saying "The MetaFacts data you cited in your story is incorrect. Our customer data shows that only around 20% of Mac users are over the age of 55." Engadget found some comments in Busine Week from Seagate CEO William Watki on the state of small-format storage, including whether the Flash memory craze has fazed the company and what's coming down the pipeline in 1.8 inch hard drives. A arently, the company will have a 120GB 1.8 inch hard drive ready for the December quarter, which would be ripe for the iPod - as it's been stuck at 60GB since Fall 2004.<br /><br />This is obviously no indication of whether these drives will actually make it into the iPod, but it's great to know they're available, which mea there's a chance. What the heck is Cro over for the Mac? It is a WINE environment that allows you to run Windows a licatio along side OS X a licatio , without the need for virtualization. This product will be a boon for those folks that only need one Windows a lication from time to time.<br /><br />I had a chance to i tall this on my MacBook Pro (this works on Intel Macs only, folks), and it is obviously still a beta. I was able to i tall Office 2003, but Outlook refused to co ect to my Exchange server, which pretty would be the only reason I would be using Cro over. However, it is still a beta so these things will ha en (it also froze up a few times). He thought the page suggested that 1.2.1 update might be more involved than A le originally stated.</p><p>According to A le, the 1.2.1 video iPod update offered "bug fixes". So the TUAW geeks got to work. We copied the download.i w from the firmware into our top secret lab folder. We unzi ed it. And then we compared the strings in the Firmware to the strings in the last Firmware release. And found...</p><p>Well, we found pretty much nothing. No smoking gu . No new hidden strings. And in countries where it can be tough to enforce intellectual property laws, it's not unusual to find iPod fakes of every flavor and variety. So it's not a huge surprise to see a wacky iPod knockoff in Ista ul, Turkey. I found this over on digg, where the usual flurry of iPod hating has flared up. For i tance, this fake (as many of them do) has an FM tuner. Am I the only one who really doe 't care about a fli in' FM tuner? I mean, really, I can count on one hand the number of times this has bummed me out. About 80% of the time I'm using the iPod in the car. Gue what? My car has an FM tuner. There's also a comment about how this fake might be "cheaper and better than the actual iPod, with more features and le crashing." Again, I can count on one hand the number of crashes I've had with my iPod... And how cheaper mea better I'll never know. What I can tell you is this: get two people to try browsing through 3,000 songs on each machine and see who starts crying first. There's also this choice tidbit from NA 's eligibility FAQ: "If you don't own Photoshop CS2 then you can download and try the Photoshop CS3 beta for 2 days. E entially, you have a 2-day grace period before you have to activate the software." This is seemingly confirmed on Adobe's download page which states: "A lice ed copy of Photoshop CS2, Creative Suite 2, Production Studio, Adobe Web Bundle, or Adobe Video Bundle is required to use this technology beyond a two-day trial period." (I'm trying to download right now, but strangely Adobe's site is really slow today. Wonder why?).
