Codename Asteroid: A le develo Firewire audio interface for the co umer

Asteroid

A le has an audio interface device in the works that pla to aggre ively compete with prosumer hardware recordingdevices. The interface, known as %26#8216;Q97%26#8217; or, more affectionately,%26#8216;Asteroid,%26#8217; is being built around A le%26#8217 GarageBanda lication.

The Asteroid will include two XLR/TRS audio i uts, two RCA outputs, and a headphone jack. It will draw power via asingle Firewire 400 port. Rumour has it that an alternate version of the device that includes a S/PDIF digital out portis circulating on the Cupertino campus, and may end up being the final version send to manufacturing.

This is a smart move. It leverages the benefits of A le%26#8217 acquisition of Emagic to create a %26#8216;Middle Path%26#8217; device thattargets the co umer who just wants to make music without needing all the pro audio bells and whistles of a high-endprosumer digital recording environment. At an expected retail price of $129-149, this unit could really a eal to thosea iring musicia who just want to get a decent recording of their guitar or vocals onto their Macs.
