A le Wirele Routers Receive Highest Rating in PC Mag Survey

A le's Airport Base Statio scored highest in PC Magazine's 18th A ual Reader Satisfaction Survey just ahead of Linksys and Cisco.

"A le wirele routers receive this year's highest overall rating score (8.9). This is e ecially noteworthy given that, in general, wired routers outscore wirele . Part of its high ratings may stem from ease of setup: A le routers tend to be co ected to simpler-to-do-everything Macintoshes."

When my clients ask for recommendatio on a wirele router, I've oscillated between A le and Linksys. I usually recommend the A le Airport Base Statio for small apartments or for people who will be managing their own networks. And I recommend Linksys wirele routers for large apartments or busine es because of their wider variety of security optio . I've also i talled D-Link, Buffalo, and Netgear routers with varied levels of succe . My experience mirrors this survery's results.

If you're building a wirele network larger than a single Airport Base Station, I highly recommend you investigate the optio that exist for extending the wirele range of the routers. I've had poor luck with u owered Hawking and Dr. Bott ante as but have had excellent succe with the external ante as sold by QuickerTek. I'm certain this is becuse the QuickerTek ante as are powered and the Hawking and Dr. Bott ante as are not. The u owered ante as just didn't boost the wirele signal anywhere near as much as the powered QuickerTek ante as.

And remember that these ante as only work with Airport Extreme Base Statio , unle you're willing to hack your earlier model.

Of course, your results may vary. Any succe or horror stories you guys want to share? Or maybe a voodoo black magic story about a wirele problem with no a arent cause?
